Jack's Biopsy

If you have been following this blog then you know that Jack had to go in yesterday morning for a kidney biopsy.  This was done to determine why he has such high levels of protein in his urine.  We have done other tests but so far, we don't know why his kidneys aren't functioning correctly.  Hopefully this biopsy will show the doctors what is going on so we can move forward with how to fix it.

The day started early (like 4:45am for me and Matt) because we had to be at Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters in Norfolk at 6:30am.  Anna stayed with a good friend and neighbor, which turned out to be a great idea because she wouldn't have had fun at all and would of ended up being quite the handful all day.  So we got there and checked in, the first thing they did was get him set up for the sedation.  Putting the IV in was the hardest part and really he did great.  He does great with needles - better than some adults.  Once he had the IV we just waited for the doctor to get there and the ultrasound tech to get ready.  Basically they do it via ultrasound so the doctor can see exactly where she is going with the needle.  Jack lays on his stomach and they access the kidneys from his back.  It was a quick procedure - we barely had enough time to finish our coffees before he was waking up.  They gave him ketamine for sedation and he woke up upset and crying.  It sucked seeing him like that.  It also make his blood pressure rise but I guess that is a normal reaction.  Once the Ketamine wore off, he was pretty much back to normal.  They moved us upstairs to the kidney center for recovery, a 6 hour wait.  We turned on cartoons and played with some legos.  Jack got to pick out a stuffed beanie baby and some stickers for being a good boy.  The doctor came in to talk to us and said that Jack may be sore for a while and to keep him from playing too hard for about a week.  So that means no soccer for him until next week.  We were released at 3pm and of course jack feel asleep on the way home - silly boy, he has all day to sleep in a hospital bed but decides that he wants to sleep in the car.  He is a little cranky and sore when we get home but nothing that a kids meal at burger king and some Tylenol don't cure.  :)

We should hear sometime this evening what the results of some, if not all, of the biopsies.  I am not sure what to hope for right now - I just want to know whats going on so we can fix it.  I will post again when we hear more.
